These checklists were created to help identify tasks that should be completed prior to starting full time at WNMU. To make your transition as smooth as possible, we highly encourage you to follow all three checklists and complete each task.
- Apply to Western New Mexico University.
- Register for Orientation.
- Apply for University Housing.
- Complete Placement Test. Mandatory for freshman and transfer students. Failure to complete the test before your advising session may adversely affect your ability to register for courses.
- All applicants must submit official transcripts from all institutions previously attended to earn final admission status.
- Submit transcripts electronically to submit.transcripts@wnmu.edu or
- Submit sealed official transcripts by mail to Office of Admissions, Western New Mexico University, P.O. Box 680, Silver City NM 88062.
- Register for classes (575.538.6000) – 12 hours minimum.
- Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
- Need money to pay for college? Check out the other options to help you make college affordable.
- Apply for scholarships.
- Submit final transcripts to WNMU Admissions.
- Review our website, and jot down any specific questions you may want to ask at Orientation.
- Apply for an on campus job.
- Connect with us via Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

- Pillows
- Toiletries
- Shower shoes/flip-flops
- Towels
- Bathing suit
- Beach towel
- 2 Pairs of comfortable shoes
- Umbrella
- Sunscreen

- Hand sanitizer/wipes
- Sweater/jacket for chilly rooms
- Casual clothing appropriate for the weather
- Username & password for Mustang Express
- Materials for note taking
- Cell phone/laptop charger if you’re bringing those items

- Meet your Orientation Leader and other incoming students.
- Learn more about and double check your financial aid, business office information and housing.
- Explore the Fitness Center, Swimming Pool, Intramural Gym, and Racquetball Courts at C-Rec Night.
- Explore student resources and academic departments at the Browsing Fairs.
- Be open to change and new experiences.
- Meet at least one person who can be a resource.
- Eat great food and explore your new home!
- Ask questions of anyone and everyone, have fun!
- Check your Mustang Express daily. Email is the primary form of communication with you.
- Send in your photo for your Mustang ID to be able to pick it up at move-in.
- Sign up for Mustang Emergency alert – an emergency information texting system.
- Contact your roommate to plan for move-in.
- Visit the Housing and Residence Life website for move-in updates. Email housing@wnmu.edu for any questions.
- Ensure your FAFSA complete and aid is committed to your account.
- Pay Tuition and Fees – your University bill is available online on Mustang Express.
- Plug into CANVAS: Get familiar with your online classes.
- Stay in touch with your Enrollment Specialist and your Orientation Leader!
- Pack to MOVE-IN!!
